About the Intensive

The Esh Circus Arts Adult Summer Intensive is a program designed for intermediate-to-advanced circus arts students ages 16 and older who wish to deepen their studies through a rigorous week of training, creative development, and community-building. The Summer Intensive will provide a structured training program to help students develop strength, flexibility, technical proficiency, and artistry.

Aerial Silks/Fabric

Partner Acro/Hand-To-Hand

Program Schedule

Classes for the Adult Summer Intensive meet from 9am to 12pm daily during the program week. Students will also have the opportunity to take advantage of afternoon workshops and additional self-directed training throughout week.

SAMPLE DAILY SCHEDULE

9:00am: Dance Class
10:00am: Choreographic Techniques & Physical Theater
11:00am: Skill Work in Focus Discipline
12:15pm: Lunch Break
1:15pm: Optional Workshop or Open Training

*Workshop topics may include Stage Make-up; Shoulder Health for Circus; Musicality for Circus Artists; and a range of other topics!

Application & Program Requirements

To apply for the Adult Summer Intensive program, students are required to submit a written application, as well as a video submission that demonstrates both their specific and overall ability.

Applicants will be assessed on a variety of criteria, including:

Mobility – Splits, side bend, back bend, shoulders, etc.
Strength – Plank hold, hollow body hold, pull-ups or hollow hang, etc.
Discipline Skills – Demonstration of intermediate or higher level of skill in a chosen focus discipline.

DEADLINE

Applications and video submissions are accepted on a rolling basis beginning March 1st and will be accepted until all spots are full. The program is capped at 8-12 participants depending on disciplines.

Tuition

$600.00

A deposit of $200 is due upon acceptance to the program.
Some need-based financial assistance is available.

Location and Facilities

Esh Circus Arts is a 5000 square foot facility, with carpet bonded foam flooring throughout, and rig points up to 19 feet of height.

We are located in vibrant Somerville, MA, a short walk from the Harvard Square and Porter Square MBTA stops, and steps from culturally-rich Union Square.

Program Instructors

Summer Intensive is led by Esh Circus Arts co-owner Ellen Waylonis and management team member Johnny Blazes. As life-long performers and passionate educators, Ellen and Johnny imbue the program with the value of balancing rigorous athletic training with artistic and theatrical dedication. Daily dance class is taught by celebrated dancer and choreographer Jenny Oliver. ASI attendees will also work with Esh’s award-winning, internationally-performing staff of coaches.
